Hair Anatomy

Discover the Role of Hair Anatomy in Hair Growth

Suffering from hair loss or thinning? Discover the surprising truths about hair anatomy, growth cycles, and the essential factors that influence hair health and vitality.

Hair consists of two key components: the Hair Follicle and Hair Shaft.

THE STRUCTURE AND FUNCTION OF HAIR FOLLICLES

• Description:

A tube-like structure located in the skin that encloses the hair root.

• Components:

- Bulb: The base of the follicle, where hair growth originates.

- Dermal Papilla: Supplies nutrients and growth signals to the hair.

- Sebaceous Glands: Produce oil to condition the hair and scalp.

- Arrector Pili Muscle: Small muscle causing hair to stand (goosebumps) when contracted.

EXPLORING THE HAIR SHAFT

• Description:

The visible part of the hair that extends above the skin's surface.

• Layers:

- Cuticle: The outermost layer, composed of overlapping cells that protect the hair.

- Cortex: The middle layer, providing strength, color, and texture to the hair.

- Medulla: The innermost layer, which may be absent in finer hair.

HAIR ANATOMY MATTERS

Both the hair shaft and hair follicle are both derivatives of the skin. The essential unit for the generation of hair is the follicle. Hair follicles have a continuous growth and rest cycle, which is referred to as the hair cycle. The hair shaft is the visible hair that grows out of the follicles and consists of keratin.

HAIR GROWTH AND LOSS

There are approximately 100,000 hair follicles on the scalp and it is normal to lose up to 100 hairs each day and usually, the lost hair grows back. The duration of growth and rest phases is affected by the endocrine, vascular and nervous systems in addition to other systems in the body. Many other factors, including age and nutrition, can also impact this cycle.
