Ethnic Hair Loss
A Specialist Approach
Hair loss doesn’t look the same for everyone. For people with African American, Hispanic, Asian, Caribbean, or Middle Eastern hair, it often goes unrecognized longer than it should. The texture, growth pattern, and follicle structure of ethnic hair can mask early signs of thinning - and the conditions driving that loss are frequently different from what affects straight or fine hair types.
At Springs Hair Restoration, we recognize that your hair is as unique as you are - with its own distinct color, texture, volume, density, and hairline contour. Understanding the beautiful complexities and scientific details of ethnic hair is our specialty. We take the time to learn how you wash, style, and manage your hair because we know it’s personal - and because that context shapes everything about how we approach your care.
Every hair type has its own biology. Curly and coiled hair follicles grow at an angle beneath the skin, which affects how they respond to inflammation, tension, and hormonal changes. Tightly coiled hair also tends to have fewer follicles per square centimeter than straight hair - meaning that when loss begins, it can become visible more quickly in some areas, while remaining hidden in others due to curl volume.
This is why hair loss in ethnic hair is frequently underestimated - both by patients and by providers who aren’t experienced with textured hair types. At Springs Hair Restoration, a deeper understanding of ethnic hair biology and cultural hair care practices is central to how we evaluate and treat every patient.
For African American men and women, hair loss can stem from genetic, hormonal, and lifestyle factors - often in combination. Androgenetic hair loss, traction from styling practices, and inflammatory scalp conditions are among the most common drivers. What makes diagnosis more complex is that these causes can overlap, and the signs can be subtle in the early stages.
A thorough evaluation, one that takes your hair history, styling habits, and scalp health into account , is essential before any treatment is considered. We take the time to learn how you wash, style, and manage your hair because we know it’s personal, and because that context shapes the right treatment plan.
Conditions such as traction alopecia and CCCA are among the most common drivers of hair loss in Black women - and among the most frequently missed. Learn how we treat traction alopecia and CCCA if you're already familiar with your condition and exploring your options.
Hair Hair loss patterns vary significantly across ethnicities, and a treatment approach that works for one patient may not be appropriate for another. Your cultural identity and personal aesthetic are important to us, we prioritize cultural sensitivity at every step, making sure that your values and preferences are respected in both diagnosis and treatment planning.
Hispanic and Latino patients, androgenetic alopecia is common but often presents differently than in Caucasian patients - frequently as diffuse thinning across the top rather than a defined receding hairline. Scalp health and hormonal factors are also frequent contributors, and hair loss in women of Hispanic descent is often tied to postpartum changes or nutritional gaps that are easy to overlook on standard lab work.
Asian patients tend to have naturally higher strand density, which can make early hair loss less visually obvious - but when thinning does appear, it often affects larger surface areas. South Asian women in particular frequently present with hair loss connected to thyroid function, iron levels, or postpartum shedding that has not fully resolved.
In Middle Eastern patients, androgenetic alopecia and diffuse thinning are both common. Hair restoration for this patient group requires careful attention to natural hairline contours and density expectations that align with cultural aesthetics - something a generalist practice may not fully appreciate.
Understanding ethnic hair biology is one part of the equation. The other is a practice culture built around honoring the patient in front of us - not fitting them into a standard protocol.
Your cultural identity and personal aesthetic are important to us. We prioritize cultural sensitivity at every step - making sure your values, preferences, and the way you wear your hair are respected in both diagnosis and treatment planning. We don’t design hairlines or recommend procedures in isolation from who you are.
A well-designed hairline is one of the most visible markers of a successful outcome - and one of the easiest ways to spot a poor one. We create hairlines that are perfectly suited to your facial structure, your ethnic features, and your natural growth patterns. There is no one-size-fits-all approach here.
Handling and transplanting curly and coiled hair follicles requires a different level of skill than working with straight hair. Our expertise in ethnic hair texture and follicle behavior ensures natural growth patterns and density outcomes - not just surface coverage.
We know how important it is to be able to wear your hair the way you want - whether that’s natural, short, loc’d, or braided. Our techniques are designed to minimize visible scarring, giving you more styling options, not fewer.
We believe in tailoring every recommendation to your individual needs. Our personalized approach ensures that every step aligns with your expectations and your goals - not a generalized protocol designed for a different patient. Proven success with similar hair types provides reassurance, and we encourage every patient to read what our patients say before making any decision.
At Springs Hair Restoration, we offer a comprehensive selection of hair restoration solutions — including surgical FUT and FUE hair transplants, as well as non-surgical options such as PRP therapy and other in-office treatments. The right path depends on your hair loss pattern, stage, and goals — not on what’s most convenient to recommend.
Whether you’re exploring options for the first time or looking for a second opinion, we can help you understand what’s driving your hair loss and what’s realistically available to you.
If you’ve noticed increased shedding, a receding hairline, thinning at the crown, or changes in your hair’s overall density — don’t wait. The earlier hair loss is evaluated, the more options are available. Many conditions that cause permanent hair loss are treatable or manageable when caught in early stages.
Trust is fundamental to any medical decision. We build that trust through a thorough consultation, honest and clear communication, and a commitment to making sure you fully understand the process, your options, and what realistic outcomes look like — before anything is decided.
We can’t wait to help you achieve the hair and confidence you deserve.

Long Post Alert...but worth the read! - A few months ago, I decided to consider a hairline transplant in Atlanta. After doing some research, I became interested in the FUT process. I was still determining where to begin, so I initially went to what I had seen for years on TV, Bosley. The consultation was excellent, but I felt too many people between me and the surgeon performing the procedure. I wanted that direct interaction to ensure I got what I wanted in my design. I went to a second, Dr. P, but it wasn’t the right fit for me, then I was referred to Dr. Zack Charkawi. From the moment I sat down with him at his desk, I knew he was the one. As a healthcare provider, I am very particular who I choose for my own healthcare needs. I completed my 4th hair restoration procedure with Dr. Zach, and I am extremely pleased with the outcome. Dr. Zach's professionalism was evident at my initial consultation, where he spent time discussing the procedure, pertinent research, and most importantly the realist expectations; he did not "over sell" the procedure. He also is the only practitioner that I am aware of who uses a specific anesthesia technique that dramatically decreased the procedural discomfort. He was very thorough during the procedure, covering all of the necessary areas. I highly recommend him and his staff without reservations!
My husband had a fantastic experience with Dr.Zack! It took him a while to find the best doctor for hair transplant. He had many consultations before choosing his clinic. The polish and professionalism of Dr. Zack and his team is excellent! My husband was very happy with the results of the procedure. We could never have asked for a better experience! I will be highly recommending him to my friends!
Dr Charkawi was fantastic. He really made me feel at ease and went above and beyond to make sure that I was happy with my hair. Also it’s a beautiful, clean office with a sister location for follow ups or further needs which is very helpful. Overall very satisfied customer.
